Which CMS platform is best for your business website?

There are many CMS platforms out there, all with different strengths. Is a WordPress website for you, or is your business better suited to Shopify?

Every CMS platform out there has its share of stalwart supporters. Your mate might tell you Squarespace is the way to go, while another swears by Shopify.

Whichever platform you end up choosing should support all the functionality your website needs, give visitors a great experience, and be easy for your team to manage. You’ll no doubt have heard us raving about the benefits of a WordPress website, and it’s one of our favourite CMS platforms to work with. Let’s take a look at some of the different options out there.

Squarespace and Wix: For beginners

Squarespace and Wix have both gathered devoted followings for making it possible to create websites with ease and efficiency. They’re designed for complete beginners so are easy to get the hang of, even if you’ve never navigated the back end of a website before. However, what these platforms provide in terms of fast set-up they lack in customisation and functionality. For this reason, they’re probably better suited to personal websites or blogs than business websites.

Silverstripe: For easy content management

This New Zealand company is an open source platform, and has a large community of people out there constantly working on improving it for both editors and for website visitors. With a modular layout designed with the user in mind, SilverStripe websites make it easy to upload and manage content in the back end. To build and modify your site you will require a developer with extensive SilverStripe expertise, however, so if you plan on using or switching to this platform make sure you’ve got a reliable one on your side.

Shopify: For eCommerce

If you’re an eCommerce business whose primary goal is driving sales, we highly recommend a Shopify website as your go-to CMS. With Shopify, you can build a responsive website that integrates with your CRM and inventory management software and showcases your products to potential customers you’re trying to reach. Among the many advantages of Shopify websites are the thousands of apps available on its App Store, the fact you don’t need to integrate with third party payment providers, and built-in analytics for reliable reporting.

WordPress: For everyone

WordPress is one of the best CMS platforms out there. Powering a third of websites globally, it’s also the most popular. It’s our CMS platform of choice here at NZ Digital for a number of reasons:

  1. It’s user-friendly. The back end is easy to navigate, and even if you don’t have much experience managing websites you’ll be able to load content on there and edit it with just some basic tutorials.
  2. There’s nothing you can’t do. There are thousands of plugins that add functionality and help improve the user experience for visitors,
  3. It’s a secure platform. This is an important factor, and WordPress has frequent upgrades that ensure your site remains as secure as possible.
  4. It’s easy to customise. The range of templates and themes to choose from makes a WordPress website easy to customise to the needs of any business large or small.

However, we’ll always choose the platform with your business and digital needs in mind, so come have a chat to us about what you’re looking for and we’ll find a solution that works.
