If you have asked three different web companies for a quote, you have probably received three wildly different numbers. One quoted $2,000. Another quoted $15,000. A third would not give you a figure without a discovery workshop. None of them explained why.
That confusion is not your fault. Website pricing in New Zealand genuinely does span an enormous range, because “a website” can mean anything from a single-page template to a custom ecommerce platform processing thousands of orders a month. The two are as different as a trailer and a truck, even though both technically move things around.
This guide breaks down what NZ businesses actually pay in 2026, what drives the differences, and how to work out the right budget for your situation.

The price of a website is really the price of four things bundled together: design, development, content, and strategy. Every quote you receive makes different assumptions about how much of each is included.
A $2,000 website almost always means a pre-built template with your logo and colours applied, your text dropped in, and minimal customisation. A $20,000 website usually means custom design, content written for search and conversion, and a build tailored to how your customers actually buy. Neither is wrong. They are simply different products, and the problem arises when a business expecting one is sold the other.
The other major variable is who does the work. Freelancers, offshore providers, template platforms, and established NZ agencies all operate at different price points, with different levels of accountability, ongoing support, and local market understanding.

Based on what we see across the New Zealand market, here is a realistic breakdown of website costs by type of build.
Platforms like Squarespace, Wix and Shopify’s entry plans let you build a website yourself for a monthly subscription. For a sole trader or a brand-new business validating an idea, this is a legitimate starting point. The trade-offs are your own time, limited flexibility, and a website that tends to look like everyone else’s. You also carry all the responsibility for structure, content and search visibility yourself.
A professional builds your website on a premium template or theme, customises the design within the template’s limits, and sets up your pages properly. This suits small businesses that need a credible online presence quickly. The main limitation is that the template dictates the structure, rather than your customers’ journey dictating it.
This is the most common bracket for established NZ small and medium businesses. It typically includes custom design, a content management system such as WordPress built to your requirements, mobile-first development, on-page search engine optimisation foundations, and content structured around your services and your customers’ questions. Most of the WordPress websites we build for NZ businesses sit in this range.
Online stores carry additional complexity: product architecture, payment and shipping integrations, inventory management, and a checkout experience that directly determines revenue. A well-built Shopify website for an NZ retailer typically starts around $15,000 and scales with catalogue size, integrations and custom functionality. Stores with complex requirements, B2B pricing or ERP integrations can move well beyond that.
Membership platforms, multi-site setups, booking systems, custom web applications and enterprise ecommerce sit at the top of the range. At this level the website is a piece of business infrastructure, and the investment reflects the revenue or efficiency it is expected to deliver.
Custom design means the layout, structure and visual language are created specifically for your brand and your customers. It costs more because it takes more skilled hours, and it pays off in differentiation and conversion performance. Template design costs less because the creative decisions have already been made, for you and for thousands of other websites.
Every feature adds development time. Online payments, booking calendars, member logins, CRM integrations, multi-language support, and product configurators all push the cost up. A useful discipline is to separate what your website must do at launch from what it might do later. Building in stages is often smarter than building everything at once.
A surprising amount of quote variation comes down to content. Some quotes assume you will supply every word and image. Others include professional copywriting, keyword research and content structured to rank. Given how competitive organic search has become, content built for search engine optimisation from day one is one of the highest-value inclusions in any web project. Retrofitting it later almost always costs more.
Freelancers are usually the cheapest option and can be excellent, but you are dependent on one person’s availability and skill set. Offshore providers offer low headline prices, with the trade-offs of communication overhead, time zones and limited understanding of the NZ market. Local agencies cost more per hour but bring a team, accountability, and continuity, which matters most in the years after launch.
The build price is not the full picture. A realistic website budget also includes the ongoing costs of running it.
Hosting and maintenance. Quality NZ website hosting with security updates, backups and support typically runs from around $50 to $300+ per month, depending on the site. Cheap hosting is one of the most common causes of slow, insecure websites, and page speed directly affects both rankings and conversions.
Domain names and licences. Domains, premium plugins, email platforms and ecommerce apps add modest but real annual costs, often $500 to $2,000 per year for a typical business website.
Marketing the website. A website with no traffic is a brochure in a locked drawer. Whether through SEO, Google Ads, or content marketing, plan for how people will actually find the site. Businesses that budget for the website but not for the traffic are consistently the ones disappointed six months later.

We regularly meet NZ businesses on their second or third website in five years. The pattern is familiar: a cheap build that looked fine on launch day but did not rank, did not convert, and could not be extended. Each rebuild costs more than doing it properly once.
The more useful question than “how much does a website cost?” is “what is a website worth to my business?”. If your website generates two extra enquiries a week, and your average customer is worth $2,000, the difference between a website that converts and one that does not is measured in tens of thousands of dollars a year. That is the context in which a $12,000 build against a $4,000 build should be evaluated. If you are unsure whether your current site is converting as it should, our article on conversion rate optimisation covers exactly that.
Most established NZ small businesses invest between $8,000 and $20,000 for a custom professional website, or $3,000 to $8,000 for a template-based build. DIY platforms cost less upfront but carry hidden costs in your time and lost visibility.
A professionally built Shopify or WooCommerce store typically starts around $15,000 and scales with catalogue size, integrations and custom functionality. Larger or more complex stores range from $30,000 to $50,000 and beyond.
Plan for roughly $600 to $3,600+ per year covering hosting, security updates, backups and support, depending on the complexity of the site. Ecommerce sites sit at the higher end.
Because quotes make different assumptions about design (custom versus template), content (supplied versus written for you), SEO, functionality, and ongoing support. Always compare what is included, not just the headline number.
