Is Shopify Plus Worth It for NZ Businesses? An Honest Guide

You Asked

Our Shopify store is growing and Shopify keeps suggesting we upgrade to Plus. Is it actually worth it, or is it overkill for an NZ business?

We Answer

It depends on your revenue, your operational complexity, and where you are headed. For some NZ retailers, Shopify Plus pays for itself within months. For others, standard Shopify still does everything they need at a fraction of the cost.

Shopify Plus is Shopify’s enterprise tier, and it occupies an odd place in most NZ retailers’ minds. It sounds like something for the likes of Allbirds and Gymshark, not for a growing Kiwi business doing a few million dollars a year online. At the same time, if your store is genuinely scaling, the limitations of standard Shopify start to show up in very practical ways: a checkout you cannot customise, discounts you are scripting workarounds for, and staff hours disappearing into tasks that should be automated.

We build and manage Shopify stores for NZ businesses at both levels, so this guide gives you the honest version: what Shopify Plus actually includes, what it costs, and the specific signals that tell you an upgrade will pay for itself.

What Is Shopify Plus?

Shopify Plus is the enterprise version of the Shopify platform, designed for high-volume merchants. It runs on the same core infrastructure as standard Shopify, which means the reliability, hosting and security you already know, but it unlocks a layer of capability that standard plans deliberately hold back: deep checkout customisation, powerful automation, B2B selling, expanded international tools, and dedicated support.

The important thing to understand is that Plus is not “a faster Shopify”. Every Shopify store runs on the same fast infrastructure. What you are buying with Plus is control, automation and scale headroom.

What You Actually Get with Shopify Plus

A checkout you can actually customise

On standard Shopify, the checkout is largely locked. On Plus, you can customise the checkout experience with Checkout Extensibility and Shopify Functions: custom fields, tailored shipping and payment logic, upsells at the point of purchase, and branded design throughout. Since checkout is where revenue is won or lost, this is the single most commercially significant difference. If your store gets traffic but struggles to convert it, our article on why your Shopify store isn’t converting covers the common causes, and checkout friction is high on the list.

Automation with Shopify Flow and Launchpad

Shopify Flow lets you automate operational work without code: tagging high-value customers, flagging risky orders, managing inventory alerts, triggering fulfilment rules. Launchpad automates scheduled events like product drops and sales campaigns, changing themes, prices and inventory at a set time and rolling everything back afterwards. For lean NZ teams, this is often where Plus quietly earns its keep, because hours of manual work simply disappear.

Built-in B2B selling

Plus includes native B2B functionality: company profiles, custom price lists, payment terms and wholesale-specific catalogues, all from the same store that serves your retail customers. For NZ businesses juggling a Shopify retail store alongside a spreadsheet-and-email wholesale operation, this alone can justify the platform.

Lower rates and better economics at volume

Plus, merchants receive reduced transaction and payment processing rates. At high sales volumes, those percentage improvements become meaningful dollars, which is a key part of the payback calculation covered below.

Expanded stores, markets and support

Plus includes multiple expansion stores for international markets or distinct brands, stronger multi-currency and localisation tools, dramatically higher API limits for integrations with ERP, inventory and fulfilment systems, and access to priority support. Full platform details are on Shopify’s official Plus page.

What Shopify Plus Costs

Shopify Plus starts at USD $2,300 per month on a three-year term (higher on shorter terms), with pricing that becomes variable for very high-volume merchants. In New Zealand dollars, you should think of it as roughly $45,000 to $50,000 per year at the entry level, before apps, development and marketing.

That number makes the decision look harder than it is. The real question is not the cost of Plus; it is the net cost after you account for reduced payment processing rates, the apps Plus features replace, the staff hours automation recovers, and the conversion gains from a customised checkout. For a store doing a few million dollars a year, those four factors regularly cover most or all of the licence fee. Below roughly $1 million in annual online revenue, they usually do not, and that honesty matters.

When Shopify Plus Makes Sense for an NZ Business

From the stores we work with, these are the signals that an upgrade will genuinely pay off:

Your online revenue is around NZD $1-2 million or more and growing. This is the zone where rate reductions and efficiency gains start covering the licence cost.

Checkout is your bottleneck. You know from your analytics that checkout abandonment is costing you real revenue, and you have exhausted what standard Shopify allows you to change.

You sell B2B and B2C. Wholesale is being run manually alongside your retail store, and it is holding growth back.

Sales events strain your operation. Black Friday, product drops and promotions involve late nights of manual setup rather than a scheduled, automated launch.

You are expanding internationally. Australia is typically the first move for NZ retailers, and Plus’s expansion stores and market tools make multi-market selling manageable.

Your systems need to talk to each other. ERP, 3PL, POS and inventory integrations are hitting the API ceilings of standard plans.

When Standard Shopify Is Still the Right Choice

If your store is under roughly $1 million in annual online sales, sells a straightforward catalogue to a single market, and your growth constraint is traffic or conversion rather than platform capability, Plus is premature. You will get far more return from investing that budget in
conversion rate optimisation, search engine optimisation and email marketing than from an enterprise licence whose features you will not use.

This is worth saying plainly because plenty of merchants are selling the upgrade before they need it. The platform should never be the most sophisticated part of your ecommerce operation.

Making the Move

Upgrading to Plus from an existing Shopify store is far simpler than replatforming from another system, since your products, customers and orders stay where they are. The real work is in taking advantage of what you are paying for: rebuilding the checkout properly, designing your Flow automations, structuring B2B catalogues, and integrating your back-office systems. That is a project, not a toggle, and it is where an experienced Shopify Plus development partner earns their fee.

If you are coming from WooCommerce or another platform entirely, our guide on migrating from WooCommerce to Shopify covers what that process involves.
