Yes it’s true, Google announced that it plans to start decreasing the rank of non mobile friendly websites starting 21 April 2015.

“Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results. Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimised for their devices.”

This means that if your website is not mobile friendly, Google may penalise your website in search results compared to other websites that are mobile friendly. You can read the full press release from Google here.
